Time to see if this Forge Android TV is worth the money

Recommended Posts

No video pass though - but it does have HDMI out - actually that is the only way to hook it up... +Eric Wills

As I see it - first impressions as as follows:

Setup:

For the most part it is ok - The phone based remote is well... pretty much a nightmare. While it does work, it constantly disconnects and can take up to 10 seconds to reconnect. Personally I have never liked phone based remotes at all - this would be much nicer with a real dedicated remote, like the Roku.

Gamepad:

Well - I think it is supposed to be good, but int he several games I tried it in it did not work well - so bad in fact that I was walking into walls and in some cases it seemed it just was not even connected or operating the game controls properly. Not sure - might be a pairing issues, I still need to try the direct connection as that will tell me right away.

USB Port on the back of the unit:

Seems to only be for the game pad, does not seem to work with any supplemental storage device like a USB drive. Well it does not recognize the 64gb one I put in there...

APPS:

26 "Entertainment Apps"

The big names are: HULU, HUFF POST, Red Bull TV, PLEX, CRACKLE, TED, NBA, VLC for Android TV, Cinema Now - Sadly I do not use any of these.

No Amazon or Netflix that I can tell.

8 Music Apps - TuneIn, Iheart, and Pandora, Google Music is not listed but is a separate app that was pre-loaded

There is a TV Remote Games Category

Casual for Gamepads

Action for Gamepads

These 3 combined have 95 Games in them total

Over all speed seems to be very good even on graphics intensive games but if the controller keeps acting like it is not connected, well game play is sort of not an issue...

+Ed R  - Had to install that from the web based store as its not allowed from the device itself - I do see an OMX.qcom.video.decoder.mpeg2

+John Friend my unhappiness with Goole TV was more about the terrible hardware....than the actual system - I actually liked the video pass thou etc - and still use it daily, but that hardware is limited and sadly was just never really updated. Also I have tried to use my xbox1 as MS wants me to but the interface is terrible for TV and it is not compatible with any DVR operations.. which is a disaster in my mind.

+Matt Lane  - as far as I can tell that Vortex option has not been released yet..

Still poking around...?

Keep in mind that there are plenty of other approved and/or compatible apps beyond those shown in the Play Store listing. You can try searching, but the index is a little screwy at times. It is worth looking at the Android TV community on here for a bunch of other apps. I wonder of anyone is keeping a master list... Also, I hear the new Play Store update may help with some of this, but I don't have it yet.
