Has anyone found a way to stop Google Play Music from automatically starting when connecting to car bluetooth? The solutions I find in the forums are not satisfactory, like unchecking media audio in Bluetooth settings (I don't want to do that because I use other apps that play media). Google Music starts blaring every time I start my car, even if Pocket Casts or another media app was the last one playing. Can't find any settings in the car's interface. Any tips?

Same problem here. As workaround I use Autostart (root needed) to block Google Play Music from starting automatically when connected to Bluetooth. The problem is that the car system sends a "play" command every time the Bluetooth input is selected. Emptying the queue on Google Play Music may also help.

As Giuseppe Cimo? has stated, this could be called a feature not a bug. The car audio assumes that you want to listen to whatever as soon as possible so it sends the play call to the phone. (This is good.) The phone then interprets that call. As you might imagine, Play Music has a deeper connection to the OS so it will play first if it has a queue ready. If the queue is empty (done so easily by tapping the "clear queue" option in the Play Music playlist) then some other audio app that can interpret the play call will begin playing. (e.g. PocketCasts)

I commonly run two or three audio apps while driving around. I have found that Lollipop has a weird quirk in the notification tray when more than one audio app is present. The notifications will jump around, back and forth, presumably trying to place themselves at the top of the list for quick and easy access. Even if only one is currently playing! This quirk along with the apps not playing well together when a play/ff/rw call is made makes me believe that the developers of the OS didn't think that more than one audio app could or would be used (or simply be in memory) at the same time.

The issue is how GPM takes advantage of this "feature". With Pocketcast, everything works as expected. If I disconnect from Bluetooth, the app pauses and stays active in the notifications. Reconnecting to Bluetooth will resume playing. However, if the app is removed from the notification (by swiping or pressing X from the lock screen) , then it won't start automatically at next reconnection. Google Play Music is very persistent. Not even a reboot will stop it from playing automatically (unless manually cleaning the queue). GPM even stops other media apps and starts playing on top.

Paul Stanwyck? I also noticed the race for the top of media apps. It's quite annoying and distracting to see the notifications rearranging continuously on the lock screen :-(
