G+_mike klaene
Probably it was a bug in the FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) software. In 1988 an A320 crashed at an airshow near Paris also due to a software problem. As both a programmer and a licensed pilot one would hope that the testing of the embedded software would have been more thorough.
G+_Michael Heinz
Yeah, I'm in the same trade (coding) and I've always put a great deal of faith in the process that aircraft manufacturers put into their software testing. From the article, the process seems to have broken down at the very last step - the actual assembly of the engines.
