G+_Snuffy Sims
Gina Trapani said exactly what I was thinking when I heard all the "high falutin" design talk in the Google I/O keynote: Material Design = Skeuomorphism 2.0. But I also agree it looks great, and I'm looking forward to it. http://www.google.com/design/spec/material-design/introduction.html
G+_Mark Stronge
While Apple has basically said skeuomorphism is a failure and gone flat, Google have said, you're wrong, but this is the right way to implement it

G+_Alan Char
Marlon Thompson Thanks! Once you get past the initial high-falutin language :) (and Harry Potter?), it's an interesting read. Although it makes a good case for why Material Design is a natural successor, or even a response, to skeuomorphism, I'm still not convinced that UI design is not just fashion. We'll see if Material Design has a longer lifespan than Holo did. After all, the choice of limitations he described is pretty much what happens whenever you create a UI framework. Other than in video games, the digital landscape has never been truly limitless. The framework constrains your UI design to a certain extent, but you still have to follow the framework's intended design principles. Which is why all UI frameworks come with guidelines for appropriate use. I think what the article may be saying is that Material Design will have more limitations than previous frameworks (like Holo). Maybe, but as a developer, I don't think of it so much as limitations, but as providing more features. It's what frameworks are about. It reduces effort for developers who take advantage of it, while providing a more consistent experience to the user.
G+_Marlon Thompson
Yeah Alan Char I was rolling my eyes at the Harry Potter thing too, but hey if Jony Ive can sit in his white room and call everything magical i'll give them that.
