Thanks!  Once you get past the initial high-falutin language :) (and Harry Potter?), it's an interesting read.  Although it makes a good case for why Material Design is a natural successor, or even a response, to skeuomorphism, I'm still not convinced that UI design is not just fashion.  We'll see if Material Design has a longer lifespan than Holo did.

 

After all, the choice of limitations he described is pretty much what happens whenever you create a UI framework.  Other than in video games, the digital landscape has never been truly limitless. The framework constrains your UI design to a certain extent, but you still have to follow the framework's intended design principles.  Which is why all UI frameworks come with guidelines for appropriate use.

 

I think what the article may be saying is that Material Design will have more limitations than previous frameworks (like Holo).  Maybe, but as a developer, I don't think of it so much as limitations, but as providing more features.  It's what frameworks are about.  It reduces effort for developers who take advantage of it, while providing a more consistent experience to the user.
