Android Wear adding WiFi, especially in the way it connects over the internet and not just a shared WiFi network is one step closer to something I posted on TWiG a couple of months ago.

As technology improves, soon all devices will be independently connected to the internet. It seems inevitable.

The discussion of the future of wearables and their relationship to phones is interesting.  Whether the phone will be a peripheral for the watch (or glasses) or vice versa misses the point.  Computing power is getting to the point where all devices will be independently connected.  Your phone can talk to your wearable directly (Bluetooth, for example) or through the cloud.  If you only want to bring one of your devices for whatever reason, it won't matter because it won't need the other one.

I think the more interesting question is: what happens with the new generation of connected users, who rarely or never make phone calls?  The whole phone system seems to be on the way out, and devices will only connect to the Internet.  Any voice communications will be last resort, so VoIP wll be more than adequate.

I also wonder how having data only affects spectrum usage.  Since data is packetized (unlike traditional phone calls), this could create a much better use of spectrum.
