G+_Wesley Mosier
Everyone is getting real scared over the the "impeding doom" of Google Voice. I feel like I need to take a moment to help everyone understand that there are major legal reasons Google won't kill the service off in the manor that a lot of people seem to fear. In order to be able to access the regular phone system, Google is governed by the laws and rules laid down by the FCC. In all the years the FCC or telephony has existed there has never once been a telecommunication company that has said "We have all your phone numbers, we're stopping service" or "we're going under and taking your numbers with us". As a matter of fact, the VERY CLOSEST that has ever happened to a "managing communication service" taking identities out of the pool in the manner people are worried about was with the GoDaddy affairs in 2007 when people temporarily lost access to their domain names. Since then, the FCC has sured by tools that help people maintain and manage their access to their phone number (and their domain name) and locked in many "rules of engagement" if these issues would ever arise again. Not that we need to be terribly concerned to "threaten" Google legally as it were, as I tend to believe Google genuinely tries to do right by its "constituents" while making a tidy profit, but if they ever would say "We're taking our service and running", bottom line is, they are FAR TOO WELL ESTABLISHED AT THIS POINT that the legal ramifications would be immense. They would be face crippling law suits from every direction. Google just isn't going to risk this. They have every reason to try to do this right.
