I'm about halfway through AAA 257 and the conversation on encryption prompted me to comment. I am a networking and security professional. I cannot stress the importance of encryption enough .. EXCEPT .. when it gets in the way. One thing to consider is recovery from encryption. I recently had an encrypted android phone brick when it [attempted to] update to Marshmallow. The content on the SD card is now unrecoverable (because I couldn't boot the device to unencrypt the card). I have the encrypted files backed up, so hopefully I'll find a way to unencrypt them at some point, but until I'm comfortable knowing my accessible files will be usable in the event of a brick, I will not encrypt my mobile device again.

Unless you have the original key,  you're more than likely not every going to be able to decrypt your data on the card.

For the most part, you should always keep a backup of your data that can always be accessed.  Think about it in terms of "I lost my phone" or "my phone was stolen".  In either of those situations, the likelihood of getting y our data back is slim to none.

The difference is that encryption stops the finder from accessing it, too.
