G+_Wesley Mosier
Originally shared by Wesley Mosier In the old Google Voice, I could receive texts via the messaging app, and this worked whether I was online or not. If I switch to Hangouts, is there any similar setting in Hangouts that allows similar functionality, i.e. receive texts even when offline.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
If you head into the phone settings in Google Voice webapp, you'll see the following listed for mobile phones. It seems the answer is no. Sorry. Receive text messages on this phone - disabled since you've opted in to send and receive SMS in Hangouts
G+_Wesley Mosier
Ugh. Google has so much work to do to get Hangouts up to the same level that Voice is at....
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Wesley Mosier - Yeah. But, for me this was never an issue. Granted, living on Long Island, I'm almost always in data range. And, if not, I don't have service at all. Additionally, I use Google Voice/Hangouts exclusively, so I never really used that feature. It also works great with the Hangouts Chrome app. The only feature I want is for the Hangouts app to become a default call handler (i.e. - click on a number from a contact, and call using Hangouts, not just from outside of the Contacts app). The final thing I need for my wife to migrate to GV is group messaging (which apparently is in the works).
G+_Wesley Mosier
Joseph Cappellino I suppose this is really the only feature that's missing. Problem is I hate leaving my data on to just use up battery. Guess I'll have to give up that old notion....
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Yeah. I keep data on all the time. It's just not worth it to me to have to deal with the constant toggling. Hopefully, they will implement this for you, soon. But, it seems like this isn't really they direction they want to head (which kinda makes sense, in the grand scheme of things). G+_Wesley Mosier
Joseph Cappellino thanks for the help. Guess I'll just stay connected, not the worst thing in the world.
G+_L I
Do you mean you can't get text messages sent to your Google Voice number when your mobile data connection is off? Or when you've logged out of Hangouts? If the former, then I can confirm it works because it works on my old phone that doesn't have a sim. If the latter, I haven't tried getting Voice SMSes while signed out, but I just turn my status off so no one bothers me.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Lionel D - There used to be a setting where it would forward the SMS to your "real" number to ensure that you got the message even when you don't have data (i.e. - cell service only). Once we merged Google Voice SMS into Hangouts, that feature is no longer available.
G+_L I
Joseph Cappellino ahh that. I wonder if you could replicate some of that functionality with something like IFTTT or Pushbullet or something.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
I'm not sure. I think the API is pretty limited around Hangouts, and I'm not sure the old Google Voice Messaging API will work after the user has merged the two.
G+_L I
If you have the SMS forward to your email, I think you could have IFTTT monitor your Gmail for any mail from that after and forward it you to your SMS. Or set up a Google Forwarding filter. Of course this would only work for reading, not responding.
