So was thinking about the "Amazon Echo" thats just come out . Android pretty much has the ability to do this now ,with a little help of a previously feature app on AAA  "Open Mic+ for Google Now" 

Great idea to reuse an old phone or tablet .

 

 

So far with my playing

1)Disable any security options (screen lockouts etc)

2)Install Open Mic+

3)Change the option for ""when to run - listening whilst screen is off "

4)Save $199

5)keep it all in the Google universe

6)Optional: Hook up to external mic/speakers

7)Optional:Change the keep word from "OK google" to Alexia :)
