G+_Lucas Nichols
This is how I see it. When android first came out, it was very laggy. Also the carriers bought into it because they could make their own crapware and not let us unintstall it. This crapware made the lag worse and usually didn't even work properly. It also gathered our information so they could sell it and make more money off of us. The rooting community figured this out early and have hated them ever since. Old grudges die hard. With the current version of android we can disable their crapware therefore it doesn't have the same effect on our phones. A person who skipped out on the first years of android will never have experienced this and will not have such a deep seeded hatred for crapware or the resentment towards their carrier. I don't root either. I have had very little experience with computers my whole life. So I have never felt comfortable with the rooting process. Now we have jelly bean. It's buttery smooth. Even ics can't compare to jelly bean. Project butter has finally made android so smooth and user friendly that the need to root is gone. Imo. Their are other benefits to rooting besides making your phone not lag. That's a different discussion though. On my note 2 I can see almost no bloatware. I love it. And I came from a galaxy nexus and also had a nexus 7. I have had mine since March. I have disabled all of the smart stay and gimmicky functions of touch whiz though. Because they made my phone lag and just ate up the battery. Anyway the need to root is pretty much gone. Phones nowadays work very well. And we can disable unwanted apps in jelly bean and up. Today the only reason to root is for people who just like to tinker with their toys. Where previously rooting was necessary for your phone to function as it was promised. Blah blah blah....... G+_Robert Nazarian
Manufacturers are finally offering proprietary features that are compelling, although still limited. Most of Samsung's offerings are gimmick (other then the S Pen stuff), but I can see how some people might like some of those features that can't be found on pure vanilla Android. For HTC, I love the Zoe and Video Highlights so I would rather buy the Sense version of the One over the Nexus Edition. Most consumers don't even know what pure Android is anyway, and the ones that do, like it mostly because they are easy to unlock/root and updates are timely. Since most consumers aren't all that worried about rooting or what version of Android they are on, the Nexus devices were never all that popular. It has almost become an elitist thing to have vanilla Android and those that don't are the "dumb" ones. I chose the DROID DNA over the Nexus 4 because I felt it was a better phone. I had the Galaxy Nexus (Verizon version) and I couldn't wait to get rid of it.

G+_Matt Bulfair
So since I am like Lucas Nichols and not comfortable rooting a phone. I think I may go S4 non vanilla to get some of the features, I didn't know I can turn stuff off, I just knew I couldn't remove it. Are there launchers that can make the s4 even better? Rather any #android phone better? I am really sold on the idea of removable battery, better hardware for longer life, and putting SD cards in. G+_Robert Nazarian
Oh there are lots of launchers available that can really add a lot of pizazz to your phone. I personally don't use them too much, but I recently reviewed Buzz Launcher. The best part of this one is that you can choose from hundreds of different looks created by other users. There is no shortage of launchers and some even give you the vanilla Android look like Nova Launcher and Apex Launcher. This is what is so great about Android. If you don't like the look and/or functionality, you can just change it.
G+_Matt Bulfair
Robert Nazarian How much of say the Sense 5 would be removed if you installed the Apex or nova on the HTC one for example? I assume not everything would go away.
G+_Benjy Szucs
Matt Bulfair one thing that I personally took into consideration before I made my choice was the uncertainty around HTC as a company. If you haven't notice, their earnings have not been good and C level execs are starting to jump ship. HTC's viability and the "what if" for updates if they would go under was the final tipping point for me personally between two great phones. G+_Robert Nazarian
Matt Bulfair What would go away is the overall look and settings of the home screens and the launcher drawer (where all the apps reside). Everything else like the camera app, text messaging app, keyboard, the settings menu, contacts, dialer, etc. would remain. You can still install text messaging and keyboard replacements as well.
