Hello KH crew. Love the show.

Borrowing on Joe Hecht's question, I'd like to know if there's an easy hack to enable powered USB hubs to provide more then 1A (usually not even that) per USB port.

When on the road with my wife, we usually have a couple of Samsung Tablets and our phones, and never enough power outlets in the hotel room. Also, multiple chargers mean weight. Ideally, the hub would provide 2.1A on at least 2 of the ports.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

I own no apple phones or computers, but I have one of their 2 port USB chargers that supplies 1 A on each port and it is only $25.  There is an article somewhere showing how most USB chargers have widely varying voltage and current which also changes as they overheat, but the Apple chargers give much better consistent voltage and current and do not overheat.

The problem is that 1A is not enough to charger a tablet. I bought a generic charger that has 2 ports, one 1A and another 2.1A. It's a start, but I guess what I really wanted was to hack something and make it work.

Funny thing is, having multiple devices is becoming rule rather than exception, and few people seem to be able to see the signs.

The kickstarter that Cole found is neat, albeit a bit overkill.pity they will not send it to Brazil, or I'd pledge. Guess I'll have to wait till it gecomes a mainstream product and pay 100 bucks at Amazon . com

Open up an usb hub, cut the traces that supply data to the usb ports, attach a resistor( I found this site that seems to cover the values well: http://blog.curioussystem.com/2010/08/the-dirty-truth-about-usb-device-charging/) to the data pins on each usb port. Then just us use plug a good 5v power supply into the power jack on the usb hub. This will cause the usb hub to be only good for charging though. If you don't attach the resistors, the usb device will only pull 500ma. you need to tell it that it is a usb charger.
