G+_Cole Brodine
How about a show on how to replace your thermostat with a programmable thermostat and set it up? Maybe you could use the Nest or some other internet connected thermostat as an example?
G+_TC DIXON
That would be perfect considering Im sitting on the fence right now deciding if I should buy a Nest
G+_iyaz akhtar
Cole Brodine I'm a fan of that idea. I might be in the market to do that myself!

G+_Jorge Cornejo
An open source application will be a better choice and maybe using a #raspberrypi as a controller!
G+_TC DIXON
Thats to Geeky Jorge Cornejo ....lol But its also a great thought
G+_Cole Brodine
Jorge Cornejo - I'm very interested in this project: http://androidthermostat.com/ They are converting an old android smart phone into an advanced programmable thermostat. It is all open source. I don't think it would be ideal for most people, but it seems to be almost exactly what you are describing, replacing the pi with an old phone. G+_Jorge Cornejo
Cole Brodine that will be an great weekend project! a bit bulky with the phone on the wall but I guess it could be hidden behind the wall!
G+_Cole Brodine
Jorge Cornejo - My thoughts exactly. I thought about cutting into the drywall and putting some sort of access panel with the phone on the face of the panel. I can't decide if I'd rather do something complex like that or just buy a Nest... EDIT for Me fail English? That's unpossible!
G+_TC DIXON
How about using one of those USB style Android PC units I had one a couple of months ago and it looked like it has some potential
G+_Cole Brodine
I think the thermostat project takes advantage of both the LCD screen of the old phone for input/display and the camera to detect motion and changes settings based on occupancy, similar to the Nest. You might be able to use one of the USB things, but you would probably have to add some sort of display and camera.
G+_TC DIXON
When I originally bought the Pi my thought was to build a Siri server to control things in my house by just using my voice but with the lack of Linux support I just ended up putting the project on hold
