G+_Eric Schultheiss
I have an old 2007 MacBook Pro that's now dead. I want to take it apart and use the screen as a secondary monitor for my iMac. Can you do an episode on how to do this?
G+_Daniel Armstrong
It can be done. You will have to get an LCD controller card to convert your computer's output signal to the LVDS signal that the panel uses. The controller has to be programmed to be specific to that panel make and model, IE panel voltage, bit depth, resolution, timings, and backlight inverter voltage. You also need cables with the correct connectors. It would be an interesting project but would probably be cheaper to just buy another new complete monitor. http://www.lcdparts.net/LCDC.aspx
G+_Eric Schultheiss
Looks expensive. I just bought a 24" monitor two weeks ago for around the price of those controllers. Thanks for the info.
G+_Matthew Bowen
An old episode of the Ben Heck Show answered this. Just as you found out, it is too much time and money to justify doing it.
G+_Daniel Armstrong
Well, the controllers are cheaper on fleaBay, but it still doesn't seem worth it unless maybe it is a high resolution IPS panel, which being from a MBP it may be, I haven't looked it up. A controller for a "Retina" panel would be worth it, if you could find one that supports it.
