G+_Kent Smith
A possible show idea for +iyaz akhtar. I need to come up with a way to locally share photos and videos with my wife. Will need to protect original copies and allow for backing up the files to the Web and also back up any edits or new creations that either of us do. It also has to be cross platform and easily done for the non-technical members after the initial setup. I've had a various starts to ideas but always end up with a gotcha at different points. Currently we have about 40Gb or files but that is always growing especially with videos adding in from our phones.
G+_William Burlingame
If you use external storage, then it doesn't matter what computers are running. Pogoplug is an option. Just plug in an external USB drive to the Pogoplug, connect it to a router and it's possible access it by computers on your lan . With a Pogoplug account, it can be accessed via the cloud when you are traveling. I have a Pogoplug and a D-Link NAS. Another use for external storage is for backup. G+_Cole Brodine
Any sort of NAS would probably be good, as long as you can set permissions on the files to prevent other users from changing them. If you did a DIY NAS, then you can install other programs on it to have it back up to the web. I currently have Dropbox on my home Linux server. I put the app on all the family's smartphones and had them share their "camera uploads" folders with me. Now, every time they take a pictures, it syncs up to dropbox and is available on my file server. I sort the pictures off monthly into a folder to free up space on their dropbox, but you probably wouldn't have to do that. I also back the pictures up to my Picasa account and an external hard drive nightly (using rsync)
