Another idea: Recent app "upgrades" from the Google App Store are reqesting all sorts of permissions that bear little or no relevance to the apps' primary functions. Maybe they are using a framework developed by the NSA?

 

The app installation process offers no way to selectively accept or deny the various permissions requested by an app. If you want the app you have to give it all the permissions it claims.

 

Is there a way to manage these permissions within the app with more granularity?

That was "App Ops." It was (in)famously removed from KitKat. Can't remember now what the name is, but there is an app which reimplements that, and (as you may have guessed) requires root.
