How about a show on the most effective way to use (install and configure) an Uninterpretable Power Supply.

 

Including spec'ing out a UPS;  how to make the graceful power off happen, employing notifications via the internet,  using PC log files to track power issues.

 

What to and what NOT to plug into the power UPS sockets.

And don't forget about how some cheap active PFC controller ICs don't play well with modified sine wave power inverters/UPS and must be used with a pure sine wave unit.

Look into Network UPS Tool (aka NUT) at http://www.networkupstools.org/ This integrates with lots of different OSes even VMWare(with some work).

Bostjan Cadej  NUT is the software that manages the direct connection (USB/Serial/Ethernet) to the UPS and sends notifications / commands to all of the NUT Agents. The NUT agents are installed on all of the machines that need to be shutdown if the UPS gets low or needs to tell a sysadmin some status message. 

 

If you are looking for an embedded solution, I'd look at a Raspberry Pi to be your "embedded" computer.
