3d modeling? Ooh, that's a rather big one to tackle!

 

Hypothetically, Father, let's say you decided to pick that.

 

I'd do a heckuva lotta research on the subject, specifically from those in the industry. To learn most 3d software is not for the faint of heart!

 

Personally, for a full 3d suite I'd recommend one of two. The first being Maya Student Edition. All you need is a student email. The only difference is it lasts a mere 36-months. That is, until you request to renew the license for another 36. :P

 

The other would be Blender, a fantastic example of a FOSS project managed properly. It has improved dramatically these past few years, which took a lot by surprise. This has a much lower barrier to entry (along with a lower commitment rate, as they go hand in hand). It's as simple as downloading a zip or exe and perhaps clicking okay once or twice.

 

Oh, and I forgot to mention, all three work on Linux, Windows, and OS X. :D
