G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
Terribly sad and frustrated. I woke up this morning and my Nexus 5 was bricked. Black screen, cannot boot into recovery, nothing. I haven't done crazy stuff with my phone, no root, no ROM, and nothing extraordinary in the use from yesterday to today. Called Play but my phone is two months past the warranty. So the device only lasted 14 months??????? My device is in perfect condition. I didn't drop it. I didn't root or ROM it. I plugged it in - I went to bed and today I own a BRICK. I"m sad - and wondering if anyone has seen this happen before and if there is anything that can be done? I think the Play store has lost me as a loyal costumer for life.
G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
.. and I do understand you have warranties and so on - and I hate APPLE - but the truth is they do have a reputation for standing behind their products that I'm not seeing from Play. G+_Joseph Cappellino
Try a different charger and see if that helps. Let it sit on there for a while, and see if it gets the "I'm charging picture." Other than that, you might be able to find a battery on eBay, but I'm not sure how entailed it is to replace the battery.
G+_Michael Abernathy
Another thing is to hold the power button for like 2 minutes. I think it may be shorter than that but 2 minutes is what I have done in past. Not 30 seconds... A full 2 minutes. I've had devices int thought were dead and they just needed this fix. G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
Thanks Michael Abernathy I'll try that next. I've done the 30 second thing like 20 times LOL
G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
Thanks Don Shane no battery issue I know of. I can't tell if it's a bad battery now because there is absolutely no response when I plug it in and I've tried a variety of different chargers. G+_scotland by drone/ Urba
If it was on charge all night I mite be possible that the battery burnt out/ shorted and with you being asleep the continuing power being applied over night has nackerd it totally .I'm not clued up on the battery in your phone but if it's possible change it ether with a new one or a test one from a friend. ? G+_Albert Robbins
If it turns out to be the battery there are instructions from iFixit to replace it. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nexus+5+Battery+Replacement/26009
G+_Akshay Sharma
Hold the Power and Volume Down button and see if you can go into the Bootloader mode. There scroll through the options with your volume buttons and select START with the power button. Fixed a friends N5 yesterday with the same symptoms. G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
thanks everyone and Akshay Sharma - I can't - won't go into bootloader mode :( I'm going to send it back to LG to see what the quote is for fixing it. I understand it was only covered for one year - but really I would have expected the device to last for more than 14 months.
G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
SEE MY FINAL POST - (I take this back)... and not to take this in a different direction - but I can't see any reason to buy from the Play Store any more. They have every right/ maybe even responsibility to not extend the coverage past 12 months - but that said - had I simply bought the device from a carrier I'd have much better opportunity for service or a used replacement. So I so no reason to use the Play store - I'll just buy from T-mobile next time.
G+_Mark Stronge
I've heard of similar experiences with iPhones as those stories make the news or some blog but it sounds like it is just unfortunate. Since you bought the phone outright you would be responsible for it and in that case... did you take out any insurance on the phone? Or would you phone be covered under your home insurance? It's up to you to do this when you buy a phone outright instead of through a contract. G+_Akshay Sharma
Do you have a Windows computer handy? If you do, plug it to the computer with the USB cable and see if you get a response. Just this simple procedure has kicked back phones to life.
G+_Akshay Sharma
Just to rule it out: you have tried alternate micro usb cables? I know you've tried different chargers... just ruling out the cable. Another point of failure is the micro usb charging port at the bottom of the phone. I've seen some clogged with lint and just general dirt. Take a pin and clean that out. Also check that the little 'tongue' there is intact and not bent/broken. If this port is at fault, thats probably the cheapest thing to get fixed!

G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
Mark Stronge No love - didn't work either - but still a happy ending! Here is the final low down. I had an issue back in November (when the phone was still under warranty) with it refusing to do a factory reset. I asked in the forums and a Google tech thought that that might show that something was wrong with the device even back then. (they had in fact offered at that point to replace the phone but I didn't accept because after waiting over two hours it finally reset). This was pointed out to Google and of course I had email documentation and they generously decided to grant a replacement. Really great customer service - I think they may have kept me for a while! G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
Akshay Sharma - your probably going to hate me for saying this but.... I'm thinking Note 4 (god - that's actually embarrassing) but I think I may like it better.
G+_Akshay Sharma
Actually, with Nova or the Google Now Launcher, the new Touchwiz is quite acceptable. The only time it will hurt will be when you see Android 5.1 roll out and you will have to wait for months! ? I recently picked up an LG G-Pad 8.3 and I'm quite surprised with how much the Google Now Launcher helps in hiding the over animated and cartoony LG skin. G+_Joseph Hurtsellers
Akshay Sharma Nice - that's great to know. I am hoping the difference between a nexus device is not quite as pronounced as it used to be since Google is releasing so much of the cool stuff as separate apps. I've got the Nvidia Shield tablet - so at least I'll get to play with most of the new stuff pretty soon. My reason for going toward the 4 is the screen, camera, and the versatility - removable batter, memory card, and lots of stuff you an get (especially since it's so popular)
