Terribly sad and frustrated.

I woke up this morning and my Nexus 5 was bricked. Black screen, cannot boot into recovery, nothing.

I haven't done crazy stuff with my phone, no root, no ROM, and nothing extraordinary in the use from yesterday to today.

Called Play but my phone is two months past the warranty. So the device only lasted 14 months???????

My device is in perfect condition.

I didn't drop it.

I didn't root or ROM it.

I plugged it in - I went to bed and today I own a BRICK.

I"m sad - and wondering if anyone has seen this happen before and if there is anything that can be done?

I think the Play store has lost me as a loyal costumer for life.

SEE MY FINAL POST - (I take this back)... and not to take this in a different direction - but I can't see any reason to buy from the Play Store any more. They have every right/ maybe even responsibility to not extend the coverage past 12 months - but that said - had I simply bought the device from a carrier I'd have much better opportunity for service or a used replacement. So I so no reason to use the Play store - I'll just buy from T-mobile next time.

I've heard of similar experiences with iPhones as those stories make the news or some blog but it sounds like it is just unfortunate.

Since you bought the phone outright you would be responsible for it and in that case... did you take out any insurance on the phone? Or would you phone be covered under your home insurance? It's up to you to do this when you buy a phone outright instead of through a contract.

Just to rule it out: you have tried alternate micro usb cables? I know you've tried different chargers... just ruling out the cable.

Another point of failure is the micro usb charging port at the bottom of the phone. I've seen some clogged with lint and just general dirt. Take a pin and clean that out. Also check that the little 'tongue' there is intact and not bent/broken. If this port is at fault, thats probably the cheapest thing to get fixed!

No love - didn't work either - but still a happy ending!

Here is the final low down. I had an issue back in November (when the phone was still under warranty) with it refusing to do a factory reset. I asked in the forums and a Google tech thought that that might show that something was wrong with the device even back then. (they had in fact offered at that point to replace the phone but I didn't accept because after waiting over two hours it finally reset).

This was pointed out to Google and of course I had email documentation and they generously decided to grant a replacement. Really great customer service - I think they may have kept me for a while!

Actually, with Nova or the Google Now Launcher, the new Touchwiz is quite acceptable. The only time it will hurt will be when you see Android 5.1 roll out and you will have to wait for months! ?

I recently picked up an LG G-Pad 8.3 and I'm quite surprised with how much the Google Now Launcher helps in hiding the over animated and cartoony LG skin.

Akshay Sharma Nice - that's great to know. I am hoping the difference between a nexus device is not quite as pronounced as it used to be since Google is releasing so much of the cool stuff as separate apps. I've got the Nvidia Shield tablet - so at least I'll get to play with most of the new stuff pretty soon. My reason for going toward the 4 is the screen, camera, and the versatility - removable batter, memory card, and lots of stuff you an get (especially since it's so popular)
