G+_David Lueza
A Linux home server would be a great project.
G+_Martiny JB
I second that idea; a Linux home server is a great project. I'm currently working on upgrading my Linux home server to Ubuntu 12.04 server LTS.
G+_Vincent Tompkins
What would the server be serving up? File, mail, name (Active Directory), RADIUS, web (LAMP?), to name just a few types of Linux servers. Also would it be Debian/Ubuntu/Mint or Fedora/SUSE/CentOS? G+_Derek J.D.
Need to figure out what you want it for like Vincent Tompkins is saying, my Fedora boxes do tons (from basic desktop, laptop, file server, media server, transcoder, etc...). G+_Jason Marsh
For those not inclined to learn a new style of OS, there's always Windows Home Server 2011. Still available 'till the end of 2013 and very inexpensive, and quite easy for Windows users.
G+_Jason Marsh
I don't like forking over all my loot to M$ any more than necessary but for the average user, whs2011 fits the bill well and it just works. I've been looking at LinuxMCE it as a base for a home security setup, and maybe a little automation. Getting 'round to it is the hardest part. :)
