By cross platform, Mac, Linux, Window, iOS, Android &, Windows phone. (win phone not a huge req, but I like broad support.) File transfers, open/public crypto protocol, on auth, key exchange, and message crypto.
G+_John Mink
Steve Gibson of Security Now has recommended Threema but I think that's only the three mobile OSes. I think anything that uses OTR protocol ( https://otr.cypherpunks.ca/ ) is more what you're looking for: Here's their list of apps: https://otr.cypherpunks.ca/software.php Dunno about the FTP side of things. But worst case you could securely share a one-time FTP link or something similar. Mostly just posting to see what other people recommend :p
G+_Travis Hershberger
I agree with John Mink, anything that supports OTR protocol should be fine. You'll probably have to run your own server to be truly secure.
G+_Ben Reese
I was thinking WhatsApp was using some good encryption now. Not sure whether it supports desktop OSs or not though.
G+_Eddie Foy
Considering the FBI has an office at Facebook, I have zero trust with any facebook property.
