G+_IB Nieman
Luv the show Padre! Everyone raves about Google Voice. Huh? Surprise surprise-I have a phone on my phone! I just don't get all the hoopla. Is it hype? Is everyone a Google brainwashed fanboy? What am I missing here? Ok, on my tablet it may be useful since it is wifi only. How about a show to enlighten us non-Googling Voice heathens. We are waiting to be converted Father B!! (Little info-about a month ago it was frustrating and dang near impossible to get a Google Voice Number-wasn't just me, a lot of people found it impossible. I personally wasted hours and cussed a lot trying to get one,. They must have fixed it. I tried again recently and had a Google Voice number within minutes). G+_Ben Reese
I don't use Google Voice to make many calls, but the voicemail service is great and it's a number I don't mind giving out to almost anyone. Having the ability to send SMS from the browser is handy - though their interface is starting to feel a bit dated.
G+_Scott Colby
I find it handy to have an extra phone number I can control to give out to people it may spam me or I may not want to hear from after a project or other event is over . It also is darn handy when you're deep inside a mall or condominium complex where there is good wifi but there is no cellular
G+_Travis Hershberger
The voicemail to text is the killer feature for me. Being able to route calls around to the computer I'm sitting in front of instead of the cell phone with no service is also great stuff. All that could be done by paying a SIP provider, but Google does it free.
G+_Ben Reese
Let's not forget that at one time Google Voice (Grand Central) WAS a SIP provider. If they were to bring that back, it could really disrupt the telephone industry.
G+_Chris Hightower
Can GV make VoIP calls (over WiFi) now? I was using grooveip in my phone to accomplish this, but didn't Google discontinue support for that kind of thing? I had heard rumors that this was going to be part of Hangouts, but I never heard if that came to fruition.
G+_Chris Hightower
IB Nieman The main reason I started using GV was because I was switching cell providers pretty often for a while and got tired of porting my number. With GV, I can just forward to the new cell number and give out the GV number. Now, if I change providers, it won't matter what the new (direct) number for the phone is; I can just forward GV to that new number and no one who calls me has to know the difference. G+_Ben Reese
Chris Hightower no, I don't think you can make VoIP calls with GV directly anymore. GrooveIP uses another free SIP service now, but could still route those calls through GV. There also used to be a plug-in for the free Asterisk PBX to make/receive calls with GV, but that's probably broken now too.
