I'm interested in creating a Mobile connected Audio / video Door Bell / Intercom. Has anyone done such a project or re-purposed an Android Phone/Tablet for such a purpose. We use Android in our house so it would need to ping Android devices on my LAN. Only one way Video is required - Door to device.

Cheers

Lance

Thanks Eddie Foy I'll check that one out - might not quite be what I'm after - as I want to initiate the connection from a button at front door (finally a use for those 3.5mm button thingys I bought a year or so ago.  So I'm guessing I'll need to look at some of the Intercom type Apps around. Hmm maybe a fisheye lens on the end of a Tube (so Android can be on other side of wall). Will play one day soon.

Yeah looks like I can do it via Motion (which could be easily triggered by passing cars, trees swaying in breeze etc.) looks like this Indiegogo was what I wanted - http://dynamicinventions.com/xentry-transform-your-spare-smartphone-into-an-electronic-door-caller-display/ . Looks like thier Beta app still exists but not really setup for Doorbell mode. Maybe a bit of a combo between their app (web of cam), IFTTT, and a 3.5 mm press button thingy might do the job.

Press the Button - launch the app - answer, blah blah - then shut off somehow with IFTTT.

Intended use for it is to answer front door from in our Studio at bottom of backyard. Unfortunately most physical smart doorbells aren't easily or cheaply available in Australia.

A PIR motion detector eliminates a lot of false positives  My MD is still there and functioning, just don't have the cam working currently.  I do get some false positives, but they are rare.

Using IFTTT (killer service) is adding in the cloud, reliability and latency could be an issue.

I'm thinking you may wind up with a off the self system over a use old cell phone hacked together in the long run.

The basic function has been solved decades ago.  Sometimes its just easier and cheaper and quicker to just not re-invent the wheel.

That being said, I still dig the project a LOT!

Quick question:  Have any home automation system running now?
