G+_Aaron Freeman
First I would verify your spare PC can support vmware. I did not right this but looks like a good write up http://virtualkenneth.com/2010/12/06/bios-settings-in-a-vmware-esxivsphere-environment/ The following bios setting is usually all I change on Intel boards in test environment. INTEL: Advanced Options > Processor Options > Intel Virtualization Technology (VT) Enabled Other then that if you can sign up with Vmware and get free copy of ESXi. To be honest I have had an account for so long I do not remember sign up proccess. After that install ESXi Once installed disable ipv6, reboot, and point browser on another PC to the ipv4 address of the vmware host. click and install vshpere client. This is not mine, but instructions look good http://virtualizeme.net/vmware-esxi-host-connecting-configuring-step-step-guide/ Lastly if you PC does not support visualization, install an OS and try out https://www.virtualbox.org/ or http://www.vmware.com/products/player
