G+_Ben Cunliffe (superblit
Think we could see a segment on Ethernet over powerline adapters? To me they sound too good to be true because sending data over electrical lines at the same time as electricity seems like it would create a lot of noise, corrupting the data. What is your opinion? G+_Dave Hart
I use one to connect my modem in the study to my Roku in the TV lounge. Works just fine. I have read of people having issues if the outlets are on different circuits. It's also a good way of extending a network on an impromptu basis where you don't want to use wifi as you don't have to pull cables.
G+_Brandon Taylor
They actually talked about this in episode 134 and PadreSJ suggested they were a bad idea they don't last very long before burning out and require both outlets to be on the same circuit http://twit.tv/show/know-how/
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
But that's just MY experience. I have not had good luck with ANY brand of Ethernet over power.
G+_Jason Perry
I have concidered using a set but from what I have read they are only as good as the premise wiring you are running them on allows them to be. In an ideal system the power coming into the house needs to be filtered to cut out any noise from outside sources. That being said I am sure there are very few people out there that actually take this step and there systems could even work very well. The devices need to be on the same circuit and you should pay attention to what else is plugged into that circuit, if it creates a lot of noise that is going to cause interference. If you do want devices on different ciruits there are ways but I personally feel that over rides the point of circuit breakers and you also leave yourself open to noise created by the appliences on the other circuits. That just sounds like too much trouble shooting for me and numerious comments from my wife about all this garbage I buy never working. Plus, if people say it dosent last I dont have the money to throw at a product like that. Eathernet over Power has been around for quite a while, I am sure there is a reason it hasnt caught on yet. G+_Darryl Schmidt
I currently have 4 D-Link powerline adapters in my house and they work fantastic. They work across different circuits at speeds capable of streaming video (Netflix and YouTube) on all three devices. I've used them in houses up to 40 years old without issue, across different networks for streaming video. The only problems I've ever had was a pair that were DOA, and I had to reset all the adapters once by unplugging and plugging them in.
