My home router 's DNS service is flaky

My home router's DNS service is flaky. It's an Actiontec 1200. I can specify which DNSes to advertise from the router. Is there any reason to include the router in the list of DNSes? I moved it's 192.168.1.254 entry to the secondary DNS spot, using my ISP's DNS as the primary. Steve Gibson's DNS Bench says that's the wrong way round for performance but I want to make sure I get reliable Internet rather than flaky internet. Any advice?

As a general show question, what's the best way to set up a home router's DNS settings? Are things like IPTV a factor? How about DNS services inside home routers?

You might try using either Google DNS or OpenDNS:

In general, sites or services like IPTV shouldn't pose  a problem but some may be blocked & require either a proxy or vpn when one is using a free public dns service.  You might consider a host file manager or editing your host file to include name resolution for the most important or frequently visited ip addresses.

I've used OpenDNS for years & frequently recommend it to parents as it can be easily configured to block certain sites or utilize provided blacklists & includes optional logging features.
