G+_Ben Cunningham
Hi Padre and Know It Alls, I am getting sick of having to pay $100's of dollars a month for Cable. I have a raspberry pi and want to #KnowHow to get it to automatically download TV shows from the internet and store them on a hard drive connected to the Raspberry Pi. I also want to #KnowHow to play it through XBMC. I think that would be a really cool Show Idea. Thanks Ben Cunningham
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Ben Cunningham the XBMC part is pretty straightforward. I believe Iyaz covered it a while back, but I guess we could do a refresh. -- The problem is that automatically downloading TV shows from the Internet is a... legally murky proposition. But what do you think know-it-alls? Can we do this without getting sued into the ground?
G+_Dylan Durdle
Ben Cunningham , get started here by following this "automated" solution. http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=47084
G+_Cole Brodine
If the TV Shows you are talking about are from places like Twit or Revision 3, it is perfectly legal. You could do the project using those RSS feeds as an example maybe? If a person found RSS feeds of shows they shouldn't have, that isn't your fault right? G+_Cole Brodine
You could also look into something like a Drobo or Synology box if you are looking to store a lot of ripped movies and music. Or look into making a FreeNAS or Unraid box. Most of those things will allow you to host a media server (like Plex) in a closet and then you can hook the Raspberry Pi (or Pis) up to the TV(s) and stream from your own server.
