G+_Sam Zick
Show idea; wake-on-lan and what it can be used for. Also, I don't know if it is possible, but can wol be set up to work with plex media server? The idea, is to save power when nobody is watching something off of the server, and go into a hibernate state. Also, when a client machine turns on, the server wakes up to provide plex content. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Hmmm.... most modern servers will already throttle the CPU and bus no almost zero, so the majority of power wasted is in the spinning drives.... maybe there's an angle there we can take. Thanks! I like it! :)
G+_Dan Phillips
The most trouble I've seen with this is getting the HDMI ports work correctly when the server is brought back to an active state.
G+_Sam Zick
I don't know how other people manage plex, but I have a dedicated plex server that isn't also the client. I feel this frees up a lot of speed on my machine for better hosting of media to multiple devices. I have had as many as 5 computers watching different movies simultaneously on the same local network as my server. My idea, is for a computer to be set up to the point where it could be headless 95% of the time, and it's sole purpose, to deliver media to clients via plex. Right now, my electric bill isn't too bad with my server running 24/7, ready for anyone to watch things at odd hours, but looking towards winter, and electric heat in my apartment, it would be nice to find ways to cut costs, but still provide the same experience.
