G+_David Herron
Re: Google Voice and Hangouts - wondering how many of you have gotten the migrate prompt, particularly if you received the update OTA. I downloaded the APK and am just wondering if all the OTA updates still lack the full integration too.
G+_Joseph Cappellino
VoIP calling is built into the app. What's not built into the app is Google Voice SMS messages within Hangouts. That, apparently, is a server-side switch, which they are rolling out per account (i.e. - just sit tight until it's done).
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Also, I think the same thing goes for voicemail.
G+_Corey Fields
Right Joseph Cappellino, but since I updated via APK, I was curious whether the OTA updates are all coming with the magic blue migrate box or whether that's been hit or miss. G+_Corey Fields
Also, some people are reporting that they saw the magic blue box and clicked "turn it on!" but then it all got rolled back.
G+_Jeremy Techtmann
They rolled the migration back for those who did it in perpetration for full roll out. G+_Randy Strye
Thanks, Jeremy Techtmann. I haven't seen that article yet. Good to know, I guess.
G+_Corey Fields
That's encouraging, but I also know that Google interprets the word "soon" differently than I do. ?
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Corey Fields I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be ruled out over the next couple of weeks.
G+_Paul Werner
Just got my account updated to use GV in Hangouts. Loving it. I was able to get rid of both the GV app and Tablet Talk on my phone because of this. I was using Tablet Talk before so my texts would get forwarded onto my tablet when I had my phone in the other room and so I can pick up calls if I had my bluetooth with me. Now that it's all baked right into Hangouts I can just do it there. People complained about the extra app drawer icon for the Hangouts Dialer but I don't mind since this also got rid of two other apps/icons for me!! G+_Paul Werner
Oh and of course I can use it to text from my computer at work for people that refuse to use hangouts for IM. Loving this update
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Paul Werner the only caveat is that you still need GV installed if you want to make carrier based calls through the regular dialer.
G+_Paul Werner
Oh I'm just using Hangouts for my calls since I'm on the 100 minute $30 TMo plan. If I want to call using my carrier number I'm just using the regular dialer. Though the only thing I can think of that I need to call via the regular dialer is emergency numbers
G+_Corey Fields
Does anybody know how much data a VoIP call uses on average?
G+_Joseph Cappellino
Corey Fields not sure, but you could probably use the data usage section to attempt to calculate it. It will probably depend on the connection speed, though, similar to streaming video with auto detection.
G+_Paul Werner
One other useful (sorta) feature I found is that if you are using the desktop version of hangouts and someone sends you a pic or you sent one it then lets you click a pencil icon on that pic to draw on it and resend. It's like what they have had already to draw on a blank screen and send it but now on the top of the pictures
