G+_Luke Militello
Homebrew NTP Servers w/GPS The title basically says it all. After commenting on Dallam Oliver-Lee's original post, I decided to share some pictures that I took of my build. I started with some cheaper parts originally to prototype some things and then I revisited the project doing some upgrades. This included replacing the original collapsible fused circuit with a more simpler design, getting some custom PCB's printed up, reverse engineering a 3.5" fan controller for a more professional look and installing higher dollar LCD displays (for the demo, I have these cycling, but I only have them displaying a big clock in actual use). I also had to replace a failed HDD; as one will see in the photos. Future plans include adding some ICOM shortwave receivers that will use WWV/H for a secondary source; these will be able to be tuned dynamically to the best frequency throughout the day via a serial port using the hook in NTPd. I also have some ACTS modems using POTS lines for backups. These servers operate totally independent of the Internet. I could go on and write a rather lengthy book about all the details, however to keep things short and sweet, if anyone is interested on the details I'll be happy to comment; just ask. * Ubuntu Linux 10.04 * Kernel 2.6.32 (w/PPS) * Garmin 18x LVC GPS * CrystalFontz CFA634 LCD
