G+_Gavin Etheridge
I've seen some suggestions for a show about backing up your data using freenas and/or #RaspberryPi. I've been experimenting with using Raspberry Pi with #CrashPlan to backup my commercially available home NAS to the CrashPlan's cloud (mean while my computers backup to the NAS whilst they are on). I'm not an expert and so was only able to get this working by following instructions online (especially http://www.jonrogers.co.uk/2012/05/crashplan-on-the-raspberry-pi/ which is excellent!). Anyway, it works, but it is slow (i.e. measured on the scale of weeks and months to backup my data). But the Raspberry Pi is always on and low powered so speed isn't necessarily of the essence. My latest thought is can I attach 1 or 2 external USB drives for faster #backup and maintain my own "off site" storage solution by taking one disk off site every X days.... I'm sure the answer is yes but I'm currently trying to work out if it is increased speed of backup is enough to justify the increased risk by having to manually transport the USB drive offsite... http://www.jonrogers.co.uk/2012/05/crashplan-on-the-raspberry-pi
G+_Akira Yamanita
Is backing up to the Pi slow or is it just the upload to Code42 (CrashPlan)? You also have the option of setting up a remote unit in the same way and set that as your backup target. You can even seed the storage locally so that you don't have to transfer everything over the Internet.
G+_Gavin Etheridge
Akira Yamanita I believe a combination of the upload speed and the speed of the client (I.e. pi in this case) are the cause of the slow backup. I believe the cpu to be important due to the need to encrypt the data before upload and to deduplicate the data to be backed up.
