G+_Daniel Casciato
I have an older phone, Nexus 6 (not 6P). Would like to run Spinrite on the device to see if it will correct the wonky camera action which has developed. Not sure how to get Spinrite running BOSD (I think that is correct) to see the phone plugged into the USB drive. I realize that in 6.1, 6.2 or 7 this will be a no-brainer. Did a search as I am certain Fr Robert has done this successfully in the past. Thanks in advance.
G+_Travis Hershberger
You'd need to hook the phone up to a computer with virtualbox installed. Then run Spinright in virtualbox with the phone setup as a passthrough device.
G+_Daniel Casciato
Hmmm - thanks, have never used VirtualBox. Have some learning to do! I imagine that VirtualBox will require an OS. Which would you suggest or will Spinrite with its integrated OS run in VirtualBox. Thanks, a bit lost in this regard.
G+_Travis Hershberger
I found the instructions on how to setup access to a raw Hard Drive, or in this case a cell phone. serverwatch.com - Using a Physical Hard Drive with a VirtualBox VM
G+_Ben Tyger
Daniel Casciato? The biggest issue you face is getting the phone to run the USB storage to run in mass storage mode. Running in mtp or ptp will not work. Android dropped USB mass storage somewhere between 4.x and 5.x depending on the flavor of android. You may have to ROM the phone to give you the mass storage support again.
G+_Ben Tyger
As for running spinrite in vbox, basically you just boot from CD and raw mount the USB mass storage as a drive in that VM. Make the VM as DOS VM.
G+_Daniel Casciato
Ben - you are 100% correct that I am having issues having the computer see the nexus 6 as a mass storage device. The PC will see it as MTP - could I mount this as a virtual drive? This now seems to be the sticking point - bummer
G+_Brian “Yikesfpv” Gipe
Older? I'm still rocking a moto x original. Haha
G+_Ben Tyger
Daniel Casciato Not that I know of. All of MTP/PTP transfers are through some type of service daemon (like samba). You need block level access.
