G+_Daniel Stagner
Amazon drive encryption Hello All, I want an encrypted folder on my amazon drive that I can use rsync with. I want to back up my files from my NAS at home to that Amazon drive folder and hold the keys to the encryption in my computer at home. Is this possible. G+_David Wiggins
One fairly easy way would be to create an encrypted volume a la true crypt then sync that to Amazon. I was actually thinking about The same problem yesterday for my freeNAS, and was debating asking for input here, myself. I'd like to think there is a better solution, but encrypted volume would work. It just feels clunky to me.
G+_Daniel Stagner
David, you think using Duplicate would be along the same line as true crypt. Also I think I want to add versioning as a requirement in my original post. Have you found a way to make the backup happen in the background using FreeNAS. G+_David Wiggins
I haven't looked at Duplicate before. This morning I've been looking at syncthing from the freeNAS plugins for it's versioning, but it's not for gdrive and the like. For cloud side, from what I can find rclone in a jail looks promising. I just need to nail down the crypt if I want to back up medical and tax info. I will look at that Duplicate you mentioned. Send interesting. G+_Daniel Stagner
I started out looking for a FreeNas plugin do to hearing about a synology plugin. I did not find a plus-n-play solution. Also the more I think about my needs the more I think versioning is a must. So far as I can tell Duplicate will not do versioning it on its own. G+_Daniel Stagner
Update: I have been playing around with Duplicati 2.0 on a Ubuntu 17.04 desktop box connected to my home network that has a folder from my FreeNas box mounted to it. I am uploading to AmazonDrive. The Web Gui is pretty slick. But it is not reliable at all. I get scripting errors that all but stop the OS from working. After stoping Duplicati and running terminal "apt-get update" to fix the OS I can restart Duplicati and it will run for a few more hours. I did try it on my Mac Mini and had similar results that would max out my 16 gb of RAM. After 2 days on the ubuntu box it has uploaded ~170 GB's of a 2 TB file. I will see if running Ubuntu 16.04.02 LTS makes a difference.
G+_David Wiggins
Duplicati 2 is still experimental. Are you using 2 or 1.3.4? I want to dive into it a bit more soon
G+_Daniel Stagner
I have been working with 2 on both the mac mini with sierra and ubuntu 16 LTS and 17. All three have proven to be unreliable on files over 250~500gb. But at below 200 or anything that takes less then 15 hours to populate it works. Its dependency on Mono framework seems to be the cooperate. I keep needing to restart the app regardless. I just pulled up 1.3.4 last night but have not been able to get it installed on the ubuntu boxes. It will install on the Mac but dose not like my version of Mono. I will do a clean install of the OS's tonight and start over on 1.3.4. I am still in need of a reliable solution. Any other ideas for getting the files to encrypt them self and store copies on the cloud. I also installed rclone and amazon seems to be blocking the distribution of the key/client_secret to the app. Not sure why.
G+_Daniel Stagner
Update: 1.3.4 is not being updated. I can't get it working. I will wait for a stable version of 2.0 before i continue to play with it. I have download the 30 day trial of Arq and started a backup from a mac mini of a 18tb volume from the FreeNAS box. It has backed up 300gb's in 13 hours but has slowed way down to about 3~6 MB per sec. Its a bit slower then what should be possible but I do not know where the Amazon server is in relation to my location. I have several 3+ TB Aperture libraries in that volume and i am very curious to see how/if Arq will handle them. I will also setup an other box to try CloudBerry tomorrow or tonight time permitting. Do you know of any other paid service that can backup to my Amazon Drive. I mite as well try them all out.
