VPN DIYer's might like to take a look at WireGuard, a relatively new protocol which was the topic of a TWiT FLOSS episode not too long ago. I'm using it with a Digital Ocean droplet to shield a linux vm used for random browsing from ISP snooping, and made a portable access point/server with a pair of Pi 3's. The second one turned out to be quite a bit more complicated than I expected, but it's boiled down to essentials in the repository if anyone wants to try it.
