Planning an improvement to my home network. I would like to add a Hardware VPN Server and hardware firewall.  I connect remotely frequently to map my network drives.  Also looking at Ubiquiti for access pints inside my house and one or two outdoor AP so I can have access throughout my yard. Any suggestions, experiences etc...

Not sure if this would meet one of your goals but throught I would throw it out there. Currently running the Asus RT-AC87u and use the VPN server function which I learned how to setup using Youtube video.

See if a google search comes up with what you need and maybe other routers have the same ability. Just a thought.

VPN wise, I'm a big fan of ZeroTier.com.  Everything becomes local, and you can always add routes manually if you have devices that the software won't run on.  No need for a dedicated VPN server.

I put in a couple Unifi-AC-Lite access points.  2.4 and 5GHz radios with those, and only ~$80 each.  Really like them and the controller software.  I actually had to turn down the power of one of the access points because the owner's office is (radio wise) right in the middle, his MacBookPro was getting confused.

Travis Hershberger? is ZeroTier software that has to run on a machine? I have a file server at home that my drives on my notebook and other mobile devices have to connect to. Currently I am using the VPN built into my router but am looking for something more secure, would prefer a box I can just set up and then forget almost would also prefer it not be a full PC if possible.
