I want to mount a 3-4 foot strip of LED lights under the cabinets above my work area

I want to mount a 3-4 foot strip of LED lights under the cabinets above my work area. This looks pretty simple with a HUE light strip, but kinda expensive. Can this be achieved in DIY fashion more affordably? Pointers to any previous episodes that might be helpful are appreciated. I'm a relatively new viewer so I'm sure there may be something out there.

5050 LED strips are cheap, but all lights are the same color. WS2812 is what you want if each one needs to be a different color.

 

I'm looking at the same type of project for some of my cabinets.

Not too worried about color, although I would like to control with Alexa

That's all in the circuit board you choose to control it with. Haven't gotten that far myself, but a Raspberry Pi Zero-W or ESP8266 chip on an Arduino should get it connected for Alexa support.
