G+_Kip Herbert-Taylor
Hey guys, Padre, in your Plex FreeNAS segment you mentioned that you could share your Plex folder over the internet if you opened the ports. Could you elaborate on that? On Windows to do that you need to have a paid subscription to PlexPass. Is this what you were referring to? Or is it a function of FreeNAS? If so, how does the end device (cellphone for example) discover the Plex library? I thought it was via DLNA discovery. I'd love to be able to do this without paying! Thanks, big fan
G+_Chris Hightower
AFAIK, you don't need to be a PlexPass subscriber to share your content. Content Sync requires PlexPass, but not sharing. I don't have PlexPass, but I share my content with family all the time.
G+_Taylor Graham
I've never used plex, but i assume when you're locating the server on your lan, you input the servers IP right? If you open whatever port plex is using to the internet on your routers config, you basically give your plex server an IP on the internet, not just your LAN. Google "plex port forwarding". G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Both right. Plex handles the "finding" part of sharing across the Internet. You just need to make sure that the appropriate ports are open and forwarded. This is actually "Part III" for the FreeNAS-Plex module we just showed. (Part II is how to use the various clients)
G+_Kip Herbert-Taylor
Oh My Glob! I've just always assumed you had to pay! This changes everything. Thanks so much!
G+_bryant thompson
support your tools and toolmakers, hard, software, firmware - if your get real value from something thats free to try and it does what you need in the time of the trial, pay for it. I'm saying this coming from someone on a fixed and ever smaller income
G+_Phil Gawron
Another solution to finding your home server is a use a ddns (dyn.org or no-ip.com) and create a way for your router or the machine running plex update the Internet. Another solution is get a cool domain name for your home, maybe a static ip if there are any left and either open public ports to the internal lan to the plex machine. I can think of a bunch of ways to accomplish this. I would also check with your ISP to see what they will allow.... Here in fl we have brighthouse networks and they surprisingly leanient on what we can play with. And why would we ..... Because we can..... Hope it helps!
