G+_Craig C
I recently received a Phantom 3 Standard as a gift. The manual says that it uses 5Ghz for control and 2.4Ghz for WiFi video downlink. Unfortunately all 2.4Ghz channels are in use where I live, so I cannot use that band with the drone. Can the Phantom 3 be configured or modified to use only 5Ghz for both control and video? If not, can the 2.4Ghz video link be disabled?
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
With a Standard, or even with the others (I have a 3 Pro) I don't think you can change the frequencies. If you can, then I don't know how. The site I go to for all things DJI is phantompilots.com. They have great discussion forums there, split into sections for each Phantom version, so I'd post a question there. Not knowing all that much about wireless, how can all 2.4Ghz channels be in use? Can you drive somewhere to fly? Any open fields? It's not wise to fly over congested neighborhoods...
G+_Craig C
Thanks for the link for phantompilots. There are only 3 non-overlapping 2.4Ghz wifi channels - 1, 6 and 11. All are in heavy use in my area. Yes, I could take the drone somewhere else, but one of my goals was to take some arial shots of the area where I live, which is semi-rural. G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Ahh... ok. But is your area that congested that even if you went outside you would still have interference? Have you tried flying it yet?
G+_Craig C
No, I have not turned on the drone. The drone would very likely interfere with other signals in the area. I can't take that risk - hence the desire to limit 2.4Ghz wifi channel use.
G+_John Sullivan
Yes, there are only a few 2.4 Ghz channels, but each device that uses a channel does not use up the whole channel. Each channel can support many devices. Just go ahead and try it ... you are not going to interfere with anybody. That's just not the way it works. G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
cosmic Ray Craig C Yea... I'd find it hard to believe that even in a very congested area the whole bandwidth would be taken. Once you get outside it really wouldn't matter. I'm not even close to being a WiFi expert, but even with the penetration 2.4Ghz has I strongly doubt there would be any issues outside. Maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in... but I honestly think you wouldn't have a problem. And actually, now that I think about it, I started out with a Phantom 2, and it runs at 2.4Ghz, and I live in a suburb of Providence, RI, and I NEVER had a problem with it... G+_Craig C
Ken and Cosmic, I appreciate your suggestions. However in this case, the 2.4Ghz wifi band is not an option. There is maximum traffic already. The traffic is long range (between houses) and due to signal levels and distance, the max thoughput is ~4Mbps (ch 1/6/11). Additional drone video traffic, which is continuous, will slow down and/or disrupt with existing traffic and vice versa. I have experienced this problem multiple times. If the P3S cannot be modified or configured to avoid the 2.4Ghz band, then it cannot be flown here.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
OK. I wasn't aware that there was house-to-house WiFi... that would congest things. The problem with my Phantom 2 was that it has the gimbal for a GoPro, but you can't turn on the GoPro WiFi because it's 2.4Ghz, and so is the controller for the Phantom, so you run the risk of crazy interference. So I installed a 5.8Ghz video transmitter and have an external monitor on my controller to receive the signal. I know that can't be done with yours though...
