I use the 8 port version of that switch as well, with two of the ports LAG to a 24port gigabit to connect 'slow' stuff like printers and wifi and also to my workbench which has a 16 port with various static VLANs so I can work on stuff without it being on my LAN.

I have Intel X520 and X540 dual-port NIC's which I picked up used in the $120 range.

My tech closet is fairly well isolated and ventilated, so heat/noise isn't a problem. Power's cheap here, bit I do still want to compare the consumption to the various PCs doing server tasks that I have now. I imagine you're right, Jon Paul Bubendorfer? I'd probably be better off with a newer, more energy efficient system, but I'll likely try it short term at least with what I have. . . Assuming I ever get then moved from 'sleep' storage, hehe.
