I just bought a Syma X5C as a getting-started quad but evidently the cheap one I bought on Amazon doesn't include a controller.  Any suggestions for which one to get?  Should I just use the ~$20 Syma one or should I invest a bit more to have something a bit better?

You need the Syma transmitter for the correct protocol. You can use the Syma X11 X12 game style controller with no camera function. You could find X11 or X12 and have a second Quadcopter or buy stand alone controller for a little less.

As Rob says, the custom protocol requires the matching transmitter. You could buy a complete set and keep the spare quad as a parts machine.

The X11 or X12 are small Quadcopters for about $25 and just share the controller with your X5C

Did you get the old X5C or newer X5C-1? They require different transmitters

Are you sure about that? Other than a reconfiguration of buttons I thought the only difference was packaging.

 

I have a transmitter from a lost X5C that I need to test after doing the range mod. I suppose I can verify that myself when I have some time.

Thanks for all the advice.  I just opted to get the $19 prime-eligible X5C controller.  Hopefully it will do what it need.  If not I may just send both bits back and order the full set with the camera.
