G+_Marlon Thompson
Hey Ron Richards and Jason Howell I keep saying that Google/Android looks at AAA. On the last show someone wrote in complaining about the listing for apps also showing games, but today I noticed something with the listing that looked different to what you showed on the episode.. As you can see in the screenshots the Play store (at least for me and not logged in) now specifically says on the main page "New and Updated Games" and Popular Apps + Games. Its not perfect but they are telling you hey we are going to list both. As you go deeper into the apps main page, You actually see new and updated apps, most popular apps and no wifi? no problem and apps not games are listed until you go in the 4th category Relax and Decompress. When you go into the new and popular section the games surface to the top as you said (as they should since more games are released per day than other apps and they are what is driving the revenue). Now personally I love when a company embraces its business model, and frankly for Google Play its games that is driving its revenue so they will make sure to surface that to the top. However it seems as if they subtly changed it recently. Now when I am logged in and I go to the apps section I am getting apps listed based on category and many of them are new. Anyone else seeing this?
G+_Elizabeth Whitmire
I think their complaint was that in the top apps section, seen in your third shot, all those top "apps" are just games, and that still seems to be the case. I do think it would be nice to have a way for more actually useful apps to float to the top.
G+_Marlon Thompson
But Elizabeth Whitmire? it does when you first enter the apps section it says new and updated apps and its only apps. I admit that their point still stands but what I am seeing now is slightly different from last week.
G+_Brandon Giesing / CosiC
Marlon Thompson the problem still exists and they didn't change anything. What you was looking at was their curated promotions which includes things like the No WiFi and New Apps and Games sections. The Top Free and Top Paid sections like the third shot (or by going to the app on your phone and going to the Apps section and swiping over) are the problem as Google's algorithm includes both Apps and Games when you are in the Apps only section. The problem only exists because they have separate sections for Apps and Games. If they only had one, then they could combine it. However, by making them separate, people are going to expect only Apps in Apps and Games in Games!
