Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ I have both a Synology RT1900ac router and a DS2415+ NAS. Both are capable of setting up a VPN so that I can get back to my network from the road. Which would be better to set it up on? The router for security. (closest to the WAN) or the NAS for performance. It will be just me using it. (hopefully :D) and I don't intend to use it for streaming. At least not often.

Thanks in advance!

It all depends on details i don't know and won't be able to easily lookup. The router probably has an ASIC included that will offload certain encryption protocols. If you're able to use one of the ASIC enabled security protocols for the VPN, the router will be much faster. And if it doesn't have that capability, then use the one with the fastest CPU.

NAS is quad-core, 2.4 Ghz, and 2+ GB RAM. Router is dual-core, 1 Ghz, and 256 MB RAM.

Either one should be able to handle the VPN fine. I'd first test with the router for the security reasons you mentioned. If that seems to balk at the load (it shouldn't), then move it to the NAS.

I wouldn't really expect any security issues using the NAS - assuming you've got the NAS on a static IP and keep it up to date.

Just my opinion, of course.
