G+_Jim Anderson
Hello, I've recently become hooked on your show. I've watched Windows Weekly for years and found your show few weeks ago. I've been watching many of the archived shows. I have an internet cable service and they claim that my speed has been increasing over the years and my bill goes up as well. Is there a way to see if my modem and router are capable of letting this 'faster service' pass through for my use? Thanks and looking forward to what the New Year bring with the changes you have planned. Jim
G+_Andrea Simcha
In Google type "spec your route and model number" also you can Google "speed test" try a couple of sites to check your Internet speed. ?
G+_Ray Toth
Can try speed test.net or look at isp page see what modems are capable with there system then you may know or may need to call them to ask this
G+_Ben Reese
Looking up the specs on the modem is probably the easiest way, but there should probably be a DOCSIS 2.0 or 3.0 label somewhere on the modem. The Wikipedia page for DOCSIS has a bandwidth table of what the max speeds for each version are: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS It's also probably possible to get to the modems config page and there should be something in there about the up link / down link limits set by you ISP. I've always found DSL and cable modems at 192.168.100.1 - even if it's acting as a bridge and passing the public IP to your router. Your mileage may vary. G+_Jim Anderson
Thanks for all this. I'll have some work to do when I get home from Germany.
G+_Ben Reese
I checked the config on my modem a couple years ago and found that TWC had it set to half of what I was paying for. I'm sure it was an honest mistakes, but mistakes happen so I'm glad I checked.
G+_Ben Reese
Yeah, TWC already had to replace that once.
