Does anybody know why when you connect a laptop to TV via HDMI there is a little bit cut off the top and bottom. Are there any workarounds for this?

Just a though while sitting in a lobbyt: if you're using it as simply a second monitor (as far as the OS is concerned) try adjusting the resolution.

Sounds like the laptop is sending the wrong resolution to the TV.

 

Just double checking, but are you going directly from laptop to display post HDMI, or is there anything (like a receiver) in the way?

 

Either way, I'd try manually setting (or at least investigating) the resolution the laptop is sending. ?

 

Also, does the laptop recognize the specific display or is it calling it a "generic monitor"

it could be overscaning. I know ATI use to default on my HTPC to a 15% overscan.

My TV does this from time to time. It has an Auto Adjust option in the settings that always corrects it.
