Pocketcasts is a TWiT favorite. I like beyondpod and it's gotten better over the years. Material design, good widget and lock screen controls..

Why do you guys need so many podcast apps when everything already plays in YouTube or it's own player, for audio only?  I use an internet radio for audio, doesn't need any apps.

Steve C Twice a day Doggcatcher goes through a list of about 25 podcasts for me and checks to see if there are any new episodes. If there are, it will make sure I am on WiFi and if so, it will download them for me. I can play them from a widget on my home screen.

Seems like a lot of trouble when you can just listen anytime you want anyway.  I use Sirius for music in the car so I really don't see the point of any of this.

Steve C Not everybody drives and not everybody has unlimited data plan. I download everything while at home so I can listen on my commute to and from work.

My trips are usually just a mile or two and only take a few minutes.  Not long enough for a podcast.

Ya I just want to download podcast, video and audio so I can listen to them in the car and other places. Now I have a lot of things to try.

I started with Google's Listen until they killed it. I then moved to Pocket Cast that I got as an Amazon Free App of the Day until Pocket Cast decide to abandon the Amazon Appstore and release a large update that broke the old app. I migrated to Podcast Addict because it was free and let me play at over 1× speed. Doggcatcher was on Amazon Free App of the Day once so I download added that and have been using it since.

 

As for my favorite... Pocket Cast looked pretty good, but I never tried the latest paid version. Podcast Addict let's you play up to 2× speed. For now, I'll stick with Doggcatcher...

Yes, the new Pocket Cast allows for faster playback, but the original did not.

 

Doggcatcher allows for up to 1.5× and Podcast Addict up to 2×.
