I need to back up my very old computer that has a 750 GB hard drive

If the data is important to you, definitely have it on at least 2 separate drives (computer and external hard drive, 2 external hard drives, 2 computers, etc). All hard drive manufacturers have a limited rate of failure. So the only garuntee is redundancy. If you really care about the data, I would also recommend an off site backup in addition to the 2 redundant drives. Either something commercial like CrashPlan or Back Blaze or, if commercial isn't ideal, then have another backup at someone else's house.?

If it is static data, archival quality optical media, and keep in a safety deposit box at bank with a optical drive to read it.

I just don't trust the cloud.  (your data held by someone you don't know on a unknown computer in an unknown location.  Would you do that with your children?) Plus with data caps and upload speeds, Its not attractive to me.  Using a friend/relative's house is a good idea,  just encrypt it.

Even a Pelican case in the shed ain't such a bad idea if its far enough away from house to not catch fire from a house fire.

Dance like no one is watching.  Encrypt like everyone is.

Eddie's idea is probably the most solid but also the most work. The 3-2-1 backup model is probably the best, but I like to live life on the edge - and I have a small budget... I've got a few internal drives and I backup to CrashPlan. CrashPlan doesn't have data caps or throttling so you're just limited by your own upload speeds. It took me about 6 months to upload 2TB.

As for those two options, I'd go with the WD and put it in mirror mode. You'll only have 4TB to work with but virtually no chance of losing the data due to drive failure.
