G+_Cole Brodine
I ordered two Raspberry Pi computers and they are finally going to ship! I'm going to try to make one into a mobile server for traveling that I can connect with via WIFI and stream shows to a tablet with DLNA. I have a 1.5 TB portable HD with all my ripped movies on it. My plan is to hook it up in the car so that my wife and kids can all watch different shows on their tablets if they want. The other one I'm thinking about making into a MP3 streaming client for my bathroom. I want to set it up with a motion sensor so that it comes on automagically when somebody walks into the (master) bathroom and starts playing music. G+_TC DIXON
Your better off buying one of these devices no internet needed you can be in the middle of anywhere and still stream media to all your devices http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/wireless/seagate-satellite/
G+_TC DIXON
I also bought a Raspberry Pi and was going to setup a Siri server in my house that would basically do what your doing but with voice

G+_Cole Brodine
I like that Seagate device, but it only comes in a 500 GB model, and they want $180 for it. It looks like you have to download an app to play videos from it instead of using DLNA. I think I still like the idea of making my own little mobile wifi network. G+_TC DIXON
I hear you I have tried the alternatives and found by the time I bought all the gadgets plus the time configuring it to all work and also making it as easy as I could for non techie family members I was better off just paying the $

G+_Thomas Schmid
Cole Brodine Please keep us up to date on the car media server project of yours. I was thinking of something similar but the R.P never occurred to me. I should really order one and start playing with it. PS: the only downside to being connected to the wifi in the car is, that you won't be connected to the Internet, just the local Wifi. With the current phones/tablets its either Wifi or 3G/LTE connection as far as I know. Unless that's not a concern, that would be a bit of a downer. G+_Cole Brodine
Thomas Schmid All the tablets my family owns are wifi only. I do have a Verizon Galaxy S3 with hotspot capabilities that I can turn on for everybody, but I only have a 2GB data cap. It hasn't been a concern so far. I think I'll have to incorporate a powered USB hub to power the HD. My research shows the PI can't power a big portable USB drive like that off its USB ports. If I do that, I might consider getting a Verizon USB stick and using it to share the internet, but that would be a ways down the road.
