G+_David House Sr.
Samsung or Crucial. Or other? My First SSD. It's going to be Boot drive, Photoshop/Lightroom, Audio recording, and all programs. ALL DATA will be saved/backed up on Externals. . Is there another/better choice in this price range? Is the Samsung worth and extra $30? Thanks for your input. :)
G+_Taylor Graham
I think Padre likes the samsungs. I have about 6 of those Crucial drives though (the 240gb version). They're ruddy fast. 400mb/s+. Can't really speak for reliability, I've only had them for 5 months. Speed is retained even at 50% capacity though.
G+_David House Sr.
Good to hear, Thanks for that input Taylor Graham! I'm leaning that way. I've used lots of Crucial memory over the years, their Customer support rocks. I called Crucial and inquired about the different models they sell and they guy told me for the money the MX100 is the best value.
G+_Scott Knight
I have had a SANDISK Ultra for almost 3 years. First one failed in 6 months, but the replacement Extreme they sent has been fine since. It was a firmware issue they eventually corrected. I have had great luck with Intel brand too. G+_Bill H. Sr. McMullen
I have a Samsung 840 Pro 240 GB SSD as my C System drive for about a year and have been very happy with it. The Samsung EVO also receives high praise. I cannot imagine Crucial anything less than a superior product,
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Actually... I've stripped all the Samsungs SSDs out of my systems. (A collection of 830's 840's and a few EVOs) -- I was having MAJOR problems with them slowing down after only a few TBs of writes. Seriously problem in a video editing system. We're talking about 50% or more reduction in read and write speed... unacceptable :( I've had good luck with Crucial, Kingston and Intel SSDs. One thing to remember is that the value models of ANY brand are going to suck... that's just a fact of life. :)
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
Personally I am a fan of samsung devices. I have a 120 gb samsung 840 evo ssd in my laptop and it runs like a champ. I've had it for about a year and haven't had it slow down or any other issues. I've also bought two other samsung SSDs from ebay, one 16gb and one 60gb. Both of those run 24/7 and I haven't noticed any problems. One thing i've heard, think it was padre, is that samsung makes every part of their SSDs. I plan on buying more 840s or the new 850s and intel drives for future builds.
G+_Michael Fullarton
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ I think I am running one of those Samsung drives you are referring too but no issues yet. Main reason probably is because I only use it for OS, Office and games, no high amount of read/writes to the drive. With all the things I've heard though I hope Samsung releases a firmware update to correct the issue.
G+_Rob Fruth
was thinking about a SanDisk SSD for typical use, good ? Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
G+_Sean Caldwell
Samsung. Read Anandtech forums and you'll get the sense that most of the tech community goes for the Samsung. I have about 10 of them in use from the 830, 840, 840 evo, 840 pro and have had zero issues.
G+_Bill H. Sr. McMullen
First , do your research on SSD longevity. Learn what TRIM is. Because SSDs have a finite usage life [currently maybe 5 years of gentle(?) use], and writing, erasing, rewriting is what "uses up" an SSD, most of us try to keep off of the SSD those items which might be frequently updated. And utilize the access speed advantage of solid state memory for those items which might be frequently read. Because of the finite life, and the cost factor, archiving is also not a proper use of SSDs. [Tongue in cheek]
G+_Bill H. Sr. McMullen
Mea Culpa! I really should have addressed my above advice to the person who asked whether an SSD was appropriate for general purpose usage.
G+_David House Sr.
THANK YOU, great discussion and advice. I am researched out! And am just going to pull the trigger. The scale tips to Crucial. Reason being, every time I call Crucial (with a telephone, that voice communication device) I get a person that is 1. Is in the US. 2. Speaks clear and understandable English, and most important 3. Always extremely helpful. The support factor is big to me. I've used tons of their RAM. I feel comfortable with this company. Not taking away from any others. Also, the PC-Per review with Allyn Malventano helped me . Here is is if interested :
