I use a 2414u PowerLine Modem attached to a Mac mini running Indigo (www.indigodomo.com) but there is also other software like OpenHAB and some Insteon hubs to use as controllers. Toby Robb yes, I'm thinking that whatever solution is going to involve taking down the light fixtures and rewiring the ceiling boxes using switches as remotes.
