Is the Pi usb 2.0. If so that would be very slow.

Daniel Stagner yes. One if the major downfalls. Plus that 480 Mbps bus is shared with ethernet and on-board SD card reader.

By biggest issue with using a RPi (any version) for any desktop replacement is that the RPi abuse the USB 2.0 bus with everything they attach to it. 100mb (200mb with full duplex ?) Ethernet, the SD card reader plus any other USB devices that connected pull from a single 480Mb pool...

 

I'd look at a banana pi M2U(ltra) based for a decent desktop replacement. The problem is that your case options aren't nearly as good.
