G+_Robert Taylor
Okay, I couldn't help myself. Watching the last couple of episodes I got bit by the 3D printing bug. Santa said to treat myself to something special. I found it in the Monoprice Maker Select 3D v2. So now for a 3D noob - Any suggestions or recommendations? Software, add-ons, advice... P.S. +Fr. G+_James Hughes
Micro Center has great prices on filament and it prints well too. I prefer ABS over PLA, but I know people that like other filaments too. You need a heated bed to print ABS (which I think your printer has).? G+_Robert Taylor
James Hughes Why the ABS? Most of what I have seen suggests PLA is becoming more common.
G+_James Hughes
PLA is more common because it prints on any printer. ABS is a little more flexible and easier to sand imo. And you can use acetone to smooth it. PLA is more brittle and won't hold up outside as well as abs.
G+_Joseph Politi
I also bought one on their recommendation. Check out this site for tips and mods on the MP 3D printer: 3dprinterwiki.info - Wanhao Duplicator i3 Also this group on facebook is very helpful, Wanhao duplicator i3 3D printing group. I'm still in the learning phase but I picked up a lot from those 2 areas.
G+_Robert Taylor
Thanks Joseph Politi the 3dprinterwiki.info looks like it has a ton of useful suggestions and mod instructions. That little tidbit will be a useful tool. Appreciate your suggestion very much!
G+_Scott Wilkinson
I am really hoping there is a followup episode on the Maker Select, like was mentioned. I got one as well, and have ran through almost 2 kg of filament already! Mostly on upgrade parts. I would be very interested to see which upgrades and tweaks Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ decides to use. One of the very first ones I did was to replace the tiny 40mm fan in the main unit with a much quieter 80mm, also removed the cover and fan from the internal power supply. The Z braces didn't improve print quality so much, but they really cut down on the need to re level the bed. * Show Ideas * Now I am thinking it would be great to control the 40mm fan on the hot end with a Arduino based on temperature. That fan is really noisy and spins whenever powered on, even if the hot end is cold. While improving print quality is always important, I am also interested to learn what allows some printers to print so much faster than others. Then what can I do to the Maker Select to speed it up!
